Weekly Cruise News Roundup, July 24, 2026: Celebrity introduces new pre and post-river cruise experiences, Royal Caribbean suspends visits to Haiti until mid-2027 and more

Updated: Aug 1

Busy week, with news ranging from itinerary changes to new onboard experiences and evolving travel trends that could shape future vacations.
One of the biggest developments was Royal Caribbean's decision to continue suspending visits to Labadee, its private destination in Haiti, through at least mid-2027 because of ongoing security concerns in the country. While the announcement affects only certain Caribbean itineraries, it serves as a reminder that cruise schedules remain more flexible than many land-based vacations. Cruise lines routinely adjust ports of call in response to weather, geopolitical events, or local conditions, often substituting equally appealing destinations that allow voyages to continue with minimal disruption.
Away from itinerary news, cruise lines continue to rethink what travelers want once they're on board. The days when a cruise was defined by endless buffets and nightly production shows are giving way to more personalized experiences. Across the industry, new shore excursions are emphasizing authentic local culture, from food tours and small-group adventures to eco-focused excursions that highlight wildlife and conservation.

Celebrity, a sophisticated line known for its modern art and high-tech nightly theatrical performances, will be debuting its new river cruises in August 2027. This will be an entirely different experience from the Las Vegas vibe of the larger ships. First off, no casinos on the river cruises. A big change for a line known to have some of the best floating casinos. Now comes news that Celebrity river cruise guests can book "Before and After Stays"—multi-day, locally led destination experiences in Prague, Budapest, Amsterdam, and Lausanne that bookend their itineraries.
These two- or three-night stays are led by what Celebrity is calling Local Storytellers, local experts who lead small groups on one included tour per day, showcasing moments that define local life such as an exploration of Amsterdam’s monumental murals or Prague’s historic taverns. Before and After Stays also include Destination Insiders: trusted local friends who can support guests in finding authentic experiences.
A few more details that shape Celebrity’s Before and After Stays:
The 2027 program covers Prague and Budapest, expanding to Amsterdam and Lausanne in 2028
Each day includes one Discovery Collection tour, Celebrity's elevated take on shore excursions, with guests choosing from among multiple themed options to customize their experiences
Stays are designed to feel seamless and fully hosted, with premium or ultra-premium hotel accommodations, daily breakfast, and ship transfers all handled in advance
Another trend becoming increasingly noticeable is the changing face of the average cruiser. For years, cruising was often associated with retirees and multigenerational family vacations. Today, younger travelers are reshaping the industry. Millennials and Gen Z travelers are embracing shorter sailings, adventure-focused itineraries, and ships that blend traditional cruising with resort-style amenities. The result is a wider variety of experiences, whether travelers are looking for a quiet escape, an active outdoor adventure, or a ship packed with entertainment.

Sustainability also remains front and center. Several cruise lines continue investing in cleaner fuels, shore power connections that reduce emissions while ships are docked, and technologies designed to improve energy efficiency. Viking cruises is debuting the world's first hydrogen-powered cruise ship. Viking Libra's maiden voyage is planned for December 2026, departing from Greece.
While environmental groups continue to push for faster progress, the industry's investments reflect growing interest from travelers who want vacations that have a smaller environmental footprint.
